Golden Rules:

  • Only deal with people face to face.
  • Avoid all remote transactions. Don’t send or receive money using Western Union, MoneyGram, Paypal, Cheque, Bank Transfer or any other methods
  • Do not trade with anyone who is unable to meet you in person.
  • Always meet in a public place and take a friend with you. If you are not be able to take someone with you make sure you are letting your friends or family member where you are going and take a fully charged mobile phone.
  • If you don’t feel comfortable with any transactions or meeting a stranger, then don’t do it
  • Do not carry a large amount of cash with you when arrange a meeting with the seller i.e. when you are buying a car or renting a property. Remember, a genuine seller is always happy to make further arrangements.

If you follow the above rules you will avoid most of the scams and frauds.

How to spot a scam or fraudulent attempt?

Most of the common scams have any of the following:

  • Buyer or seller is unable to meet face to face (often they are not in the country or in the same town as you)
  • Ask you to send or receive money by Western Union, MoneyGram, Paypal, Cheque, Bank Transfer etc
  • If you are renting, they ask for a deposit before showing any property
  • They encourage you to carry or bring a large amount of money when arranging a meeting
  • They decline to meet in a public place
